Systems Thinking, Systems Changing (Registration Form)
December 11, 2009
Boards are the catalyst for change and growth in their school systems. Yet change often does not come easily. Learn how systems work as they go through the change process in this highly interactive session. Kitty Blumsack and the MABE Academy Fellows will present this session using the work of Peter Senge, Michael Fullan, Gene Hall, and Shirley Hord.

Collective Bargaining – The Board’s Role
January 15, 2010
Collective bargaining is more than “the exchange of proposals and hammering out an agreement.” It is influenced by a myriad of dynamics, and requires boards to understand these influences, along with their roles and responsibilities in the process. This session provides information relative to the collective bargaining process that will be useful as Board members carry out their responsibilities. We’ll examine roles and responsibilities of other stakeholders, Maryland law, alternative approaches to traditional bargaining, and potential legislative issues around labor relations. Leaders for this session are Don Kopp from Montgomery County and members of the Maryland
Negotiations Service (MNS).
Who Should Attend: Board Members, Superintendents
Key Work Area: Climate, Collaboration
Understanding the Work of the State Board*
February 23, 2010

Religion in Public Schools: Survival Tips for School Boards
March 12, 2010
Public schools continue to be ground zero in the nation’s culture wars. Learn some of the trickiest current and emerging legal and political minefields for school districts and the latest rulings from the courts on church and state. Come with plenty of your own questions and experiences. Most important, discuss survival tips specifically for school board members—tips that remain useful even as the latest hot issues and the court rulings continue to change. Sound interesting? Join Maryland’s own Rochelle Eisenburg, Esquire, from the law firm of Hodes, Pessin and Katz, for this course.

Fiduciary and Ethical Dimensions of Board Leaders
