Maryland Named as One of 10 Race to the Top Grant Winners 

U.S. Department of Education Press Release: 
Nine States and the District of Columbia Win Second Round Race to the Top Grants
August 24, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced today that 10 applicants have won grants in the second phase of the Race to the Top competition. Along with Phase 1 winners Delaware and Tennessee, 11 states and the District of Columbia have now been awarded money in the Obama Administration's groundbreaking education reform program that will directly impact 13.6 million students, and 980,000 teachers in 25,000 schools.

The 10 winning Phase 2 applications in alphabetical order are: the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

Education Jobs Bill Good News for Maryland 

On August 10 the President signed into law the Education Jobs Fund legislation strongly supported by the National School Boards Association and other education advocates, for the purpose of sustaining funding for teachers and other school based staff in the face of state and local budget cuts. Within just a few weeks, Maryland will receive more than $178 million to be allocated promptly to local school systems.   more ...

Willis Award.  As a seasoned advocate for students in Maryland public schools, Bill is a friendly and familiar face to education leaders around the state, and an excellent choice to receive this prestigious award.
